Thinking of Fitting a Security Light? 3 Important Factors to Consider

Truth‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ be told, most people consider security lighting as a ‘set it and forget it’ kind of task. They buy an inexpensive floodlight, put it on the wall, and think that their property is now a fortress.

It’s not. A bad and tasteless light literally becomes a trigger for the burglar to know right away what they will be taking. If you want a system that really scares off the intruders, rather than just making the neighbours angry, you should stop guessing.

At Insight Lightings, we not only provide the light bulbs, but we also create visibility. Below are three things that you are likely to overlook and the reason why they are the only matters important to ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌you.

1. The “Blind Spot” Blunder: Height and Placement

Most think mounting PIR (Passive Infrared Sensor) lights high up is the most optimal route to go. Mounting them too high (12 feet high) will create a large dead zone directly under the unit.

  • The Reality: Mounting at 6-8 feet is the sweet spot. This is high enough to avoid easy manipulation but low enough to ensure the light actually detects the heat of someone walking up to the door.
  • The Approach to Security is Twofold: If you wish to enhance pathway lighting in the front area as well as at intersections, including side gate illumination, it is recommended to provide at the most common point of entry an intruder would use.

2. Sensor is a Two-Edged Sword.

No point in having a security light that activates from a cat or a branch. After some time, you will be so used to the “alarm” that you will simply ignore the light, which is precisely what a burglar wants.

  • The Truth: Your sensor should have adjustable Lux (light levels) and Sensitivity.
  • The Plan: Use your sensor to disregard small objects, only activating when there is complete darkness. If your light is constantly flickering, it is not a security feature but a sign of bad ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌maintenance.

3. Lighting Levels: Stop Blinding Yourself

A greater number of lumens does not lead to an increased sense of security. Overly bright lights can create what are called ‘harsh contrasts’– extreme contrasts of black and white that create pitch-black shadows next to glaring white lights. The security threat knows enough to remain within those shadows that your eyes and cameras can’t see.

  • The Reality: The truth is that what you want is not intensity but rather uniformity.
  • The Strategy: The strategy to achieve that is to use several less powerful LED lights to ‘wash’ an area with light rather than using one powerful, blind flood light. This removes anyplace they might hide and ensures that your security cameras work properly at night.

Stop Guessing. Start Securing.

If‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ you consider that a homemade light from a large store will be sufficient, you are risking the safety of your property. Proper security lighting is really a combination of art and the science of PIR technology and beam angles.

Don’t accept the “good enough” standard. Get in touch with Insight Lighting right away for outdoor lighting solutions of professional quality that really work. Be it landscape integration or high-performance security zones, your lights will only reveal an intruder’s ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌mistake.
